Smuggler's Boot GSM Blend

In 2014, The Smuggler's Boot wines were released for the first time. The name comes from the trade embargo period in South Africa, when growers & winemakers smuggled vine material into the country by hiding the cuttings in Wellington boots. The Smuggler's Boot series celebrates this ingenuity.

The GSM Blend has almost equal parts Grenache and Mourvèdre, with Syrah playing a supporting role. The attractive nose on this unsmoked GSM is filled with violets, blackberry, crushed black peppercorns and black cherry syrup. Easy to drink with mouthwatering sandy tannins, brisk acidity, and freshly chopped mint that adds freshness to the mid-palette. A wealth of sensations on the palate such as black raspberry, wild lavender, molasses, some dried grass, and even musk. When fresh, it is friendly to all tastes, which over time unfolds and "closes" with a long finish.

For this particular wine, Kershaw wanted to use grapes that came from regions that, although characterized as warm during the day, became quite cool in the evening, which would create a full-bodied, structured wine, yet with an elegant aromatic nose and freshness due to the acidity. He also looked at areas that would give a salty sensation. The result is a GSM blend from the famous Paardeberg in Swartland, a region that is highly acclaimed by wine critics. When it comes to the time of vinification, Kershaw's concern is to capture all of the above elements without any pre-requisite winemaking techniques. This is why the wine has been aged without the strong wood influence, and the softness that characterizes it is due to the use of egg vinifies and later the partial amount of oak cubes, previously used giving this wine complexity.
